Radio Trailer research

Radio trailers are an important part of the overall campaign for advertising the film. They are used to help promote viewing dates and to help the audience understand the genre the overall film. Radio trailers use many different features in the film and normally synergise with the film as they will use sound, diegetic and non-diegetic to give hints to the audience of what will be in the film. For example the radio trailer may use the same soundtrack as the film uses and may also feature pieces of dialogue from the film as well.

Some radio trailers may use a type of viral marketing strategy such as the war of the worlds radio trailer that was broadcasted in which they faked an alien invasion and created moral panic in America. This was effective as then they released to the press that it was fake and was a marketing ploy for the film War of the Worlds. This in turn created hype and anticipation for the film as now many people knew the name and the viral ad stuck in their minds.

Many films use Radio trailers as a way to target people who would not usually see or watch the trailers or posters so is another tactic to catch peoples minds and is a good way to widen your audience. There are different factors to take into account when a  Radio trailer is being made. One is what type of music is going to be used as the overlay and the volumes of it in each part. The music in the radio trailer can convey many different meanings and is important in creating a successful trailer as it helps the audience to identify the genre of the film easier. Another component of a radio trailer is the tone of voice that is used for the voice over. The tone of the speakers voice can convey many meanings such as if the voice is whispering or is quite it may suggest the film is a horror whereas if the voice is loud and booming it would suggest that the film is a action film. The last component for a Radio trailer is the backing noises such as sound effects and other similar sounds. A radio trailer can include sound clips from within the film as well. All of these components come together to create identity fort the film and to help the audience identify what the genre is going to be.
